Bee swarm in Upton upon Severn? Help is a minute away.

Upton upon Severn is a small Georgian river town on the Severn in south Worcestershire, between the Malvern Hills and the flat meadow country of the Vale of Evesham. The Worcester Beekeepers serves the town, and the surrounding landscape — the Severn riverside willows and watermeadow margins, the old orchards and hop-yard remnants of the Hanley Swan and Welland fringe, the limestone lower slopes of the Malvern Hills with their wild thyme and knapweed, and the rich arable hedgerows of the Vale of Evesham farmland — gives local bees an excellent mixed season from early cherry blossom to late ivy on the Georgian riverfront walls.

Typical swarm locations

Collectors regularly attend swarms in the lime and sycamore trees of the Church Street and Waterfront conservation areas, along the Severn riverside willows and flood-meadow margins at Ryall and Uckinghall, in the old orchard remnants and walled gardens of the surrounding estate and farmstead properties, and in the chimney stacks and eaves of the older Georgian and black-and-white town-centre buildings.

Forage in Worcestershire

The Vale of Evesham opens the year with apple, pear, plum and the last surviving commercial asparagus flowers. Oilseed rape fills the middle fields; hawthorn and sycamore line the lanes. Lime dominates the June streetscape of Worcester, Malvern and Kidderminster. The Malvern Hills bring limestone grassland herbs and a small late-summer heather supplement on the upper slopes; bramble is universal. The tail of the year still carries some traditional hop-garden forage around Bromsgrove, and ivy on the old black-and-white villages closes the season.
