Royal Wootton Bassett is a market town in north Wiltshire between Swindon and Chippenham, granted the royal prefix in 2011 in recognition of the repatriation ceremonies that the town spontaneously organised when fallen servicemen and women were flown into nearby RAF Lyneham. The town has a long high street of Georgian and Victorian buildings and is set in the open vale country south of Swindon, where the landscape transitions from the flat clay vale around the town to the chalk downland of the Marlborough Downs to the south-east. The surrounding farmland — a mix of improved pasture, arable and old hedgerow-rich field margins — provides a productive lowland season for local bees; bramble fills every bank and hedge bottom in summer, and the mature garden and churchyard trees of the older town centre carry lime and horse chestnut through June. Early blackthorn and hawthorn along the cowslip-strewn down edges open the year, followed by oilseed rape on the clay vale around Chippenham. Sainfoin is still grown here, and chalk grassland herbs — thyme, marjoram, knapweed, yellow rattle — give a herb-scented character to summer Wiltshire honey that connoisseurs notice.
