Todmorden is an Upper Calder Valley mill town straddling the Yorkshire–Lancashire border, set in one of the most dramatic of the Pennine valleys. The steep sides of the Calder gorge carry dense hawthorn and sycamore in the lower cloughs, with bilberry and heather on the open moorland of Todmorden Moor and Stoodley Pike above. The town is known locally for its community growing projects and abundant garden forage — sycamore, lime, fruit trees and bramble are all heavy bearers in the sheltered valley bottom.
Collectors are regularly called to swarms in the garden fruit trees and sycamore of the Valley terraces around Lumbutts and Cornholme, in the old millstone-grit walls and chimney stacks of the mid-Victorian terraces, in the hawthorn and elder scrub along the Rochdale Canal towpath, and in the bilberry and hawthorn on the clough edges above the town.

The lower valleys of the Aire, Calder and Wharfe open with sycamore and wild cherry in April, before the hawthorn and hill meadows of the Pennine fringe come in. Bramble carries the middle of the season, supported by rosebay willowherb on the post-industrial brownfield — a strong northern flow. The signature crop is heather: bell from late July and ling through August on Ilkley Moor, Baildon, Ovenden, Rishworth and Denholme commons, giving the thick, ambercast heather honey that remains a point of local pride.
