Bee swarm in Oxted? Help is a minute away.

Oxted is a commuter town on the dip slope of the North Downs, where the chalk scarp gives way to the Wealden Greensand and the broad wooded valley of the River Eden. The chalk grassland of the North Downs Way above the town carries wild thyme, marjoram and bird's-foot trefoil in summer; the ancient oak and hornbeam woodland of the Hazel Bottom and Titsey estate provides a long lime and sweet chestnut flow; and the hedgerow-rich farmland of the Eden valley below extends the season with hawthorn, field maple and bramble from April to October. Oxted is in Surrey BKA's Croydon and Reigate division territory.

Typical swarm locations

Oxted collectors attend swarms in the chalk grassland margins and woodland edge of the North Downs above Old Oxted, in the lime and sweet chestnut avenues of Titsey estate parkland and the Master Park residential streets, along the hedgerow-lined lanes between Oxted and Hurst Green, in the old orchard and cottage garden boundaries of the conservation area in Old Oxted, and in the chimney pots and wall voids of the older sandstone and tile-hung Surrey vernacular properties near the town centre.

Forage in Surrey

Spring builds fast on blackthorn, hawthorn and horse chestnut along the North Downs scarp, then leans heavily on field maple, sycamore and the urban lime avenues of Guildford, Dorking and Woking. The lowland heaths — Chobham, Frensham, Thursley — give a late bell heather crop in good Augusts that colonies here can count on, supplemented by rosebay willowherb across the MoD training land. Bramble is dense from Box Hill to the Surrey Hills AONB, and the old walled churchyards carry a strong ivy flow into autumn.
