Hoyland — formally Hoyland Nether — is a former mining and market town on the Barnsley–Sheffield border, set between the Pennine moorland fringe to the west and the Don Valley colliery lowlands to the east. The Barnsley BKA covers this area, and the surrounding country rewards local bees well: the parkland and estate woodland of nearby Elsecar Heritage Centre and Wentworth Woodhouse's landscape give a strong sycamore and lime June flow, the upland moor edges above Hoylandswaine and the Pennine slopes contribute bell heather, and the Don and Dove valley watermeadow margins add riverside willows and meadowsweet through the summer.
Collectors regularly attend swarms in the older stone terraces and churchyard sycamores of the town centre, in the estate woodland and walled-garden remnants of the Elsecar Heritage Centre grounds, along the Elsecar Reservoir and canal-arm willows, on the heather and bilberry moorland margins above Hoylandswaine and Stainborough, and in the chimney stacks of the older mining-town properties.

The Don Valley arable belt contributes oilseed rape to the early flow. Sycamore and horse chestnut fill May in Sheffield parks — Norfolk Park, Endcliffe, Graves; the lime avenues of Broomhill and Doncaster carry June. Sheffield's western edge opens onto the Dark Peak moors, with ling heather on Stanage, Burbage and Big Moor — a crop Sheffield beekeepers migrate to regularly. Rosebay willowherb is dense on former steelworks land; ivy closes a long season in the blackened-stone suburbs.
