Bawtry is a small market town on the old Great North Road south-east of Doncaster, with Georgian coaching inns, a central market place and easy access to the Idle and Torne riverside meadows of the Humberhead Levels. The surrounding flat farmland carries oilseed rape in April and May; the river margins support hawthorn, blackthorn and willow; and the parkland estates around Bawtry Hall contribute lime and horse chestnut to the summer forage.
Collectors attend swarms in the historic coaching-inn yards and garden trees of the Market Place, in riverside hawthorn and willow along the Idle towards Newington, in the parkland lime of the Bawtry Hall estate grounds, and in outbuildings and eaves of the older stone properties on High Street.
