Wincanton is a compact market town on the headwaters of the River Cale near the Dorset border, encircled by the rolling mixed farmland of South Somerset. The South East Division of the Somerset BKA serves the town; the nearby Bath BKA also covers the east of the district. Hawthorn and blackthorn are heavy on the old hedgebanks of this ancient enclosed landscape, sycamore and ash provide early pollen on the lane sides, and white clover flourishes on the permanent grassland farms between Templecombe, Horsington and Abbas and Templecombe. Wincanton Racecourse grassland adds a wild-flower-rich supplement in late summer.
Collectors regularly attend swarms in the mature garden trees and stone-copings walls of the High Street conservation area, in the derelict orchard gardens and hedgebanks of the outlying hamlets of Bayford and Holbrook, in the old farm buildings and haystack yards around Henstridge and Abbas and Templecombe, and in the dry-stone boundary walls on the Dorset road approaching Gillingham.

The apple orchards of Taunton Deane, Glastonbury and the Tone Valley give an early, intense flow in May; sycamore and hawthorn run behind. Lime scents the streets of Bath and Wells in June; bramble blankets every hedge. The Levels contribute a long late flow on willowherb, loosestrife and himalayan balsam along the rhynes. Mendip provides limestone grassland herbs — wild thyme, marjoram, knapweed — and the Quantocks give a small but real late heather supplement. Ivy closes the year on old orchards and stone churchyards.
