Watchet is a small harbour town on the Bristol Channel coast of West Somerset, lying between the wooded combes of the Quantock fringe and the Vale of Taunton Deane. The West Somerset branch of Somerset Beekeepers covers the town, Minehead and the coast. The mixed character of the Watchet area — pastoral fields on the vale, dense coastal hedgerows, and the wooded cleaves of Doniford and St Decuman — delivers a long and varied forage season: hawthorn and blackthorn in the coastal hedges in April and May; lime and sycamore in the town gardens; bramble on the old quarry and railway margins; and ivy on the stone-built church of St Decumanus and the harbour warehouses in autumn.
Collectors attend swarms in the old lime-washed and stone cottages of the Market Street and Mill Lane area, in the hedgerow oaks and hawthorns of the lanes towards St Decumans and Doniford, on the mature garden trees of the residential streets behind the harbour, and in the coastal scrub and bracken along the cliffs above Blue Anchor Bay.

The apple orchards of Taunton Deane, Glastonbury and the Tone Valley give an early, intense flow in May; sycamore and hawthorn run behind. Lime scents the streets of Bath and Wells in June; bramble blankets every hedge. The Levels contribute a long late flow on willowherb, loosestrife and himalayan balsam along the rhynes. Mendip provides limestone grassland herbs — wild thyme, marjoram, knapweed — and the Quantocks give a small but real late heather supplement. Ivy closes the year on old orchards and stone churchyards.
