Uppingham is a handsome south Rutland market town built almost entirely of local ironstone and limestone, set on a ridge above the Welland valley. Its Georgian high street, the lime avenues of Uppingham School's grounds and the hedged pastoral country all around provide a strong June flow, with a long season running from blackthorn in March to ivy on the churchyard walls in October.
Collectors are regularly called to swarms in the school lime trees and the stone walls of St Peter and St Paul's churchyard, in the old chimney stacks and ironstone terraces of the town centre, in the hedgerow hawthorns along the Oakham Road, and in the mature garden apple and pear trees on the residential fringes above the Welland valley.

The season opens on blackthorn and hawthorn along the ancient limestone hedgerows, followed by sycamore and oilseed rape across the arable fields east of Oakham and Ketton. Lime flowers well in both market towns in June; white clover and field margins carry colonies through July. The reservoir shore at Rutland Water supports willowherb and wild angelica into late summer, and field maple, bramble and ivy on the churchyard walls close the year through October and November.
