Ystradgynlais is the southernmost town in Powys, set in the upper Tawe valley where the National Park boundary of the Brecon Beacons begins and the former anthracite coalfield gives way to moorland. The Dan-yr-Ogof National Showcaves complex lies upstream, and the Craig-y-Nos Country Park — the former home of opera singer Adelina Patti — occupies the river gorge above the town. The Swansea Valley here is wide enough to carry oilseed rape on the valley floor in spring; the moorland edges above carry bilberry and ling heather from July into September, and the deep hedged lanes of the limestone valley sides carry hawthorn and sycamore through May. Bramble is dense on the colliery reclamation slopes and the valley-side woodland edges. The transition from ex-industrial valley to national park moorland gives local bees an unusually varied season within a compact radius.
Swarms around Ystradgynlais are reported on the Craig-y-Nos valley woodland margins and riverside willows, in the old stone terraced properties of the town centre and Ynyscedwyn Road, on the Dan-yr-Ogof scrub and limestone pavement edges, and in the moorland-fringe farm outbuildings above Coelbren and Glyntawe.

Spring comes late. Blackthorn and hawthorn carry the early season; sycamore is important on every farmstead. White clover in the hay meadows is still a meaningful flow. The dominant late-summer crop is ling heather across the Brecon Beacons, the Black Mountains and the Cambrian uplands — dark, set, much of it commercially worked. Bilberry and upland grassland herbs add supplements. Bramble fills the sheltered valleys. A modest ivy flow on stone-built villages closes a short year.
