Bee swarm in Newport (Pembrokeshire)? Help is a minute away.

Newport — Trefdraeth — is a small market town on the north Pembrokeshire coast at the mouth of the Nevern estuary, in the shadow of the Preseli hills. The town has a Norman castle, a medieval church and an estuary with outstanding botanical interest — common sea-lavender, glasswort and cord-grass on the saltmarsh — alongside hawthorn and blackthorn on the surrounding hedged farmland. Gorse on the Carningli common and the Preseli foothills opens the season early; the Preseli hills themselves carry bell and ling heather from late July. Bramble on the cliff path and sycamore in the town gardens support midsummer. Pembrokeshire Beekeepers' Association covers the area.

Typical swarm locations

Local collectors handle swarms on the gorse-covered Carningli common above the town, in the sheltered gardens and ivy-covered walls of the older stone properties on Bridge Street and Market Street, along the Nevern estuary saltmarsh edges and riverside alder, and in the eaves and chimney stacks of the older cottages and farmhouses around the castle mound.

Forage in Pembrokeshire

Gorse on the Pembrokeshire Coast Path begins flowering in earnest by March. Blackthorn and hawthorn follow on the sheltered hedges; sycamore and horse chestnut in Tenby, Haverfordwest, St Davids and Fishguard carry May. Lime and bramble fill midsummer in the towns. The Preseli hills contribute bell and ling heather in a quietly reliable August flow. Coastal sea-lavender, sea-thrift and dune plants along Freshwater West and Newgale add seasoning; ivy on stone-built cottage walls closes the year.
