Bee swarm in Wantage? Help is a minute away.

Wantage is the market town of the Vale of White Horse, lying at the foot of the chalk scarp below the Ridgeway and birthplace of King Alfred the Great. The Oxfordshire BKA covers this area, and the surrounding landscape gives local bees a chalk-and-vale season of exceptional character: oilseed rape on the rich vale farmland provides a strong early flow; hawthorn and sycamore in the town's parks and the hedged greensand lanes carry May; and the chalk downland of the Ridgeway above White Horse Hill contributes thyme, marjoram, knapweed and scabious — a herb-scented blend that gives Vale of White Horse honey its distinctive flavour. Sainfoin is still grown on some downland farms nearby. Lime in the market place and the older streets; ivy on the stone-and-brick walls of the older properties closes the year.

Forage in Oxfordshire

Spring opens on blackthorn, hawthorn and cherry plum along the stone hedges of the Cotswolds fringe and the chalk lynchets of the Vale. Oilseed rape is locally significant in Cherwell and South Oxfordshire. Beech in the Chilterns contributes to a huge honeydew-flavoured June flow some years, while lime avenues fill central Oxford and the larger market towns. Bramble, rosebay willowherb and field bean carry July; ivy along the Thames valley walls and the old college gardens closes the year.
