Merthyr Tydfil · Swarm collection

Bee swarm in Troedyrhiw? Help is a minute away.

Troedyrhiw is a valley-floor colliery village midway between Merthyr Tydfil and Aberfan, sitting on the narrow Taff floodplain between steep wooded valley sides. The riverbank carries alders, willows and meadowsweet along the Taff; the slopes immediately above the terrace rows carry sycamore and hawthorn transitioning to bramble and gorse on the old tip ground above the village. The terrace rows are Victorian, with enclosed rear gardens carrying fruit trees and soft fruit bushes that add a useful early-spring supplement to the sycamore flow in May. Elder is prolific along the stream corridors that descend the valley side to join the Taff.

Forage in Merthyr Tydfil

Sycamore is the dominant May flow tree throughout the county borough, most concentrated on the valley sides and along road margins. Reclaimed plateau grasslands carry a strong white clover flow from June; hawthorn and blackthorn scrub is dense at the valley-head field boundaries. The upper slopes above 350 metres carry bilberry and heather on Mynydd Aberdare and the Beacons foothills, supporting a July-to-September upland flow for apiaries at Dowlais and Cefn Coed y Cymmer. Bramble is prolific on all former tip ground, and elder follows every stream corridor through the town. Ivy closes the forage year in October across sheltered valley-side gardens.
