Merthyr Tydfil · Swarm collection

Bee swarm in Dowlais? Help is a minute away.

Dowlais is a hillside ironworks township above Merthyr Tydfil, historically the site of the most productive ironworks in the world under the Guest family. It sits at over 350 metres on the eastern shoulder of the Taff valley, with the Brecon Beacons plateau visible to the north and Mynydd Aberdare rising to the west. At this elevation the plateau above the housing carries bilberry, heather and gorse, giving apiaries here access to a distinctive late-summer upland flow from late July. Hawthorn scrub is dense on the plateau field boundaries; sycamore lines the village streets and the former works roads. Reclaimed ironworks ground now carries white clover and rough meadow grassland.

Forage in Merthyr Tydfil

Sycamore is the dominant May flow tree throughout the county borough, most concentrated on the valley sides and along road margins. Reclaimed plateau grasslands carry a strong white clover flow from June; hawthorn and blackthorn scrub is dense at the valley-head field boundaries. The upper slopes above 350 metres carry bilberry and heather on Mynydd Aberdare and the Beacons foothills, supporting a July-to-September upland flow for apiaries at Dowlais and Cefn Coed y Cymmer. Bramble is prolific on all former tip ground, and elder follows every stream corridor through the town. Ivy closes the forage year in October across sheltered valley-side gardens.
