Spilsby is a small market town in the East Lindsey wolds, birthplace of the Arctic explorer Sir John Franklin and a quiet hub for the farms and villages of the Lincolnshire Wolds AONB. The surrounding chalk wolds carry oilseed rape on the arable plateaux, with dense hawthorn and blackthorn hedgerows in the combes, old orchard remnants around farmsteads, and bramble-covered banks along the chalk streams that drain east towards the coastal marshes.
Collectors are regularly called to swarms in the hedgerow hawthorn and old orchard trees on the wolds lanes around Partney and Hagworthingham, in the chimney stacks and eaves of the Georgian Market Place properties, in the garden apple trees of the older residential streets, and in the veteran willows and alder along the Lymn and other chalk-fed streams below the town.

Oilseed rape is the defining early Lincolnshire flow, enormous in scale across the Fens and Wolds. Field beans, hawthorn and blackthorn carry the hedgerows. Lime and sweet chestnut line the Georgian streets of Lincoln, Stamford and Boston. Bramble is universal, and rosebay willowherb flushes disused airfields and dismantled rail corridors. The Lincolnshire Wolds, though not high, carry sainfoin and chalk grassland herbs. Coastal buckthorn at Gibraltar Point and ivy in the Wolds villages finish a long year.
