Countesthorpe is a large village south of Leicester on the gentle clay and Till Vale farmland of south Leicestershire, its substantial residential area growing from a historic hosiery village core. The River Sence meanders through flat flood meadows to the south and east; the farmland hedges between Countesthorpe and Foston carry hawthorn, field maple and elder in abundance; oilseed rape is widely grown on the surrounding arable. The village's parks, allotments and mature gardens provide lime, horse chestnut and sycamore forage; bramble is heavy on the railway embankments and hedgerow margins toward Blaby and Fleckney. The south Leicester greenbelt corridor adds an unexpected richness of forage for what is in many respects a commuter settlement.

Oilseed rape and field beans drive the arable flow. Sycamore and horse chestnut in the market towns build the mid-May crop; lime dominates June in Leicester, Loughborough and Market Harborough. Charnwood brings sweet chestnut, bracken and patches of bilberry; Bradgate and Belvoir parks add ancient lime and oak. Bramble is universal; rosebay willowherb fills ex-quarry ground around Mountsorrel. Ivy on the red-brick farmhouses and old pub gardens closes the season strongly.
