Baldock is one of Hertfordshire's oldest market towns, set on the chalk downland of the north of the county where the Roman Ermine Street passes through an ancient brewery town of Georgian frontages, wide coaching-road streets and a fine medieval church. Collectors in Baldock regularly attend swarms in the lime and horse chestnut trees of the church precincts and High Street gardens, in the chalk-facing garden banks and shrub borders of the older residential streets, on the oilseed rape field margins toward Clothall and Bygrave, and in the chimney stacks and eaves of the Georgian and Victorian brick townhouses of the town centre.
