Elloughton is a large village at the southern foot of the Yorkshire Wolds, sitting on the chalk escarpment above the Humber where the hills meet the broad estuary. The village and its twin settlement of Brough form a substantial commuter community, with the wolds farmland rising steeply to the north and the Humber bank with its reed beds and mud flats stretching south. The chalk scarp carries chalk grassland wildflowers, wild thyme and knapweed on old Wolds faces; the hedge-lined lanes of the Elloughton Dale hold hawthorn, elder and bramble in abundance; sycamore and lime are well represented in the garden streets. Oilseed rape is the defining early flow across the Wolds and Holderness plain. Hawthorn and field maple line the hedgerows. Lime lights the streets of Beverley, Driffield, Hull (Kingston-upon-Hull) and Bridlington. The Wolds chalk grasslands carry thyme, knapweed and sainfoin; bramble and rosebay willowherb are universal.
