Bolsover is a hillside market town in northeast Derbyshire dominated by the restored Bolsover Castle, a seventeenth-century riding house and keep perched above the limestone escarpment. The castle grounds and surrounding woodland carry sycamore and lime, and the farmland plateau to the west and the Doe Lea Valley below the escarpment provide hawthorn in spring, oilseed rape and white clover in early summer, and bramble through July. Swarms around Bolsover settle on the castle walls and the churchyard yews of St Mary and St Lawrence, in the mature gardens of the older properties along Castle Street and Market Place, on the hawthorn and elder of the limestone-edge lanes towards Shuttlewood and Scarcliffe, and in wall voids on the older stone terraces below the escarpment.

Spring opens on blackthorn and hawthorn in the dales, with sycamore and field maple on the valley slopes. Oilseed rape is common in south Derbyshire. The signature flow is high-moorland ling and bell heather across Bleaklow, Kinder Scout, Stanage and Big Moor — thick, amber-cast, and still commercially migrated to. The White Peak adds limestone grassland herbs — wild thyme, knapweed, marjoram — and bilberry grows on the moorland margins. Rosebay willowherb flushes every disused quarry, and ivy closes the year on stone-walled farms.
