Millom is a small west Cumbrian coastal town set at the tip of the Duddon Estuary, with the Black Combe fell rising steeply inland and the wide intertidal sands of the Duddon stretching south toward the Furness coast. The town grew on iron ore and still retains much of its Victorian working-town character — Norman Nicholson, one of the finest English landscape poets of the twentieth century, was born here and wrote about its hardscrabble beauty for decades. Honey bees in Millom have access to a rich combination of Duddon Valley sessile oakwood and fell heather to the north, coastal sea-aster and sea-purslane on the estuary margins, and the bramble, gorse and hawthorn of the sheltered lanes above the Hodbarrow RSPB reserve.
Local collectors attend swarms in the garden trees and eaves of the Victorian terraces of St George's Road and Devonshire Road, along the Duddon riverside hawthorn scrub and willow carrs north of the town, in the gorse and bramble on the Hodbarrow peninsula lagoon margins, and in the stone outbuildings of the Black Combe fell farms toward Bootle and Silecroft.

Spring comes late here; blackthorn and hawthorn only really get going in mid-May. Sycamore is important around every fell farm; bramble and white clover carry midsummer. The defining flow is fell heather — bell from late July, ling into September — across the central Lakes, the Howgills and the north Pennines, still widely migrated to for one of the best heather crops in England. Bilberry in the oakwoods adds a small early-summer supplement. Limestone pavement herbs on the Morecambe Bay edge and ivy on whitewashed cottages finish the year.
