Alston is England's highest market town, a compact huddle of stone-built terraces and a cobbled market cross perched above the South Tyne at nearly 1,000 feet in the North Pennines AONB. The surrounding moorland carries some of the most productive heather-honey ground in northern England — broad ling-clad tops stretching east toward Nenthead and west over the Pennine watershed — while the South Tyne valley itself brings hawthorn, sycamore and riverside meadow forage down to the town edge. Bell heather comes into flower in late July, ling follows through August, and the bilberry on the rough moor provides an earlier supplement for hives kept high. The season here is short and intense, peaking in a compressed July-to-September window.
Collectors around Alston attend swarms in the mature sycamores and ash trees of the market place and the Townhead terraces, in the walled gardens and outbuildings of the older lead-mining cottages, along the South Tyne riverside hawthorn and willow scrub below the town bridge, and on the upper heather-moorland edges toward Nenthead and Garrigill where colonies are sometimes kept for migratory heather work.

Spring comes late here; blackthorn and hawthorn only really get going in mid-May. Sycamore is important around every fell farm; bramble and white clover carry midsummer. The defining flow is fell heather — bell from late July, ling into September — across the central Lakes, the Howgills and the north Pennines, still widely migrated to for one of the best heather crops in England. Bilberry in the oakwoods adds a small early-summer supplement. Limestone pavement herbs on the Morecambe Bay edge and ivy on whitewashed cottages finish the year.
