Sedgefield is a handsome historic market town on the eastern Durham plain — its elegant Georgian townhouses and the Norman church of St Edmund cluster around a broad market place, and the surrounding countryside is a mosaic of managed parkland, farmland hedges and community woodland that has improved enormously since the closure of the local collieries. Hardwick Hall Country Park, with its ornamental lake and specimen trees just to the west of the town, provides lime, horse chestnut and sycamore forage of a kind rarely found on this part of the Durham lowland. Bramble is heavy on the hedgerows; oilseed rape is grown on the surrounding arable; the Trimdontop farmland to the north carries hawthorn-lined field boundaries.
Collectors in Sedgefield regularly attend swarms in the mature lime and horse chestnut of Hardwick Hall Country Park, in the walled gardens and garden hedges of the older townhouses on Front Street and West End, in the parkland trees and orchard margins at the town edge toward Fishburn and Mordon, and in the chimney stacks of the older colliery-era brick terraces in the surrounding villages.

Spring is slow to start. Sycamore and hawthorn carry the early flow; oilseed rape is moderate on the lowland. Lime fills June in Durham, Bishop Auckland and Darlington. The defining late-summer flow is North Pennines heather — Teesdale, Weardale, Edmundbyers — still producing some of the finest ling honey in England. Rosebay willowherb is heavy on ex-colliery land; bilberry on upper moorland adds a supplement. Ivy on cottage walls in the dales closes the year.
