Newtownhamilton is a small market town in the south Armagh uplands, set among the drumlins and blanket-bog margins of a remote border landscape. The town lies close to the South Armagh hills, and the surrounding farmland carries a rich patchwork of hawthorn-hedged fields and whitethorn-banked lanes. Apple orchards are found on the better-drained drumlin slopes toward Markethill and the Armagh fruit-growing belt to the north. Whin and heather appear on the rougher high ground to the south. Apple blossom in the Loughgall, Portadown and Richhill orchards gives one of the most concentrated early pollination flows in the British Isles. Hawthorn and sycamore follow.
