Liskeard is a compact granite market town in East Cornwall, perched on high ground above the Looe Valley and the broad agricultural plain that rolls towards Bodmin Moor. The town's medieval streets and Victorian villas are set among old garden boundaries where sycamore, lime and hawthorn provide a reliable early-season flow, while the hedged meadows of the Looe Valley below carry blackthorn in April, bramble through July, and ivy well into October. Swarms around Liskeard are often reported from the mature gardens and orchard remnants along Well Lane and Barras Street, from the hedged banks of the lanes dropping towards Dobwalls and St Keyne, from chimney stacks in the older granite terraces near the station, and from the bramble and elder scrub along the Looe Valley footpath.

The season opens with gorse on every headland, flowering intermittently most of the year but peaking in April. Blackthorn on the cob hedges lights up the byways; sycamore and hawthorn carry the early build; and the slow-growing pittosporum and myrtle in the sub-tropical gardens of the south coast provide unusual supplementary forage. Bramble is dominant through July, bell heather appears on Bodmin Moor and the Penwith commons in August, and the mild autumn leans on ivy and fuchsia hedging well into October.
