Bee swarm in Tamerton Foliot? Help is a minute away.

Tamerton Foliot is a historic village on a Tamar tributary creek north of Plymouth, largely preserved within the city boundary and retaining its medieval church, village green and a scattering of older farmsteads above the tidal water. The Tavy and Tamar tidal creeks carry oak-and-ash woodland down to the water's edge at Warleigh Point and Tamerton Lake. Hawthorn and blackthorn are dense on the winding lane hedges approaching from Weston Mill Lake, and the churchyard lime at St Mary's is a locally famous June swarm site.

Where swarms appear in Tamerton Foliot

Typical swarm locations

Tamar and Tavy creek-side oak and ash woodland margins at Warleigh Point and Tamerton Lake produce spring swarms in the streamside canopy. Hawthorn and blackthorn lane hedges on the Weston Mill Lake approach are a reliable late-April gathering site. The churchyard lime and elder at St Mary's church on the village green is perhaps the most noted local swarm location, flowering in June and attracting prime swarms each year. Older stone-built farm and cottage outbuildings above the creek are the most frequent cavity swarm sites.

Forage in City of Plymouth

Gorse on the Dartmoor edge at Roborough Down and the Plympton Hill fringe opens the season in February and March. Blackthorn and hawthorn on the Plym and Tamar valley hedgerows follow; apple blossom in the Plympton and Tamerton Foliot orchard remnants adds to the May flow. Sycamore and lime in Central Park, the Hoe gardens and Devonport Park give a reliable June city flow. Bramble is dense on the old military estate scrub at the Efford and Plymstock fringes; willowherb on the estuary embankments carries through August. The Tamar and Tavy creek-side woodland at Warleigh carries ash, hazel and wild cherry. Coastal ivy on the Sound-facing cliff gardens and the dockyard walls closes the year.
