Bee swarm in Plymstock? Help is a minute away.

Plymstock is a suburb south-east of Plymouth overlooking the Hooe Lake inlet and the Plym estuary at Turnchapel, its older village core giving way to inter-war and post-war residential streets above the water. The estuary shore carries sea-lavender and coastal scrub on the tidal margins; Pomphlett Mill pond and Radford Lake have riverside willow and alder. Hawthorn is dense on the farm hedges above Elburton and Brixton, giving a strong late-April flow on the exposed plateau above the estuary.

Typical swarm locations

Hooe Lake estuary shore coastal scrub and sea-lavender attract clusters on sunny June mornings. Radford Lake and Pomphlett Mill pond willows and hawthorn on the water margins are a spring swarm site. Residential garden sycamore and ornamental cherry in the inter-war streets of Goosewell Road and Staddiscombe Road produce swarms in May and June. Farm hedgerow hawthorn above Elburton on the Brixton approach is a reliable early-season gathering point.

Forage in City of Plymouth

Gorse on the Dartmoor edge at Roborough Down and the Plympton Hill fringe opens the season in February and March. Blackthorn and hawthorn on the Plym and Tamar valley hedgerows follow; apple blossom in the Plympton and Tamerton Foliot orchard remnants adds to the May flow. Sycamore and lime in Central Park, the Hoe gardens and Devonport Park give a reliable June city flow. Bramble is dense on the old military estate scrub at the Efford and Plymstock fringes; willowherb on the estuary embankments carries through August. The Tamar and Tavy creek-side woodland at Warleigh carries ash, hazel and wild cherry. Coastal ivy on the Sound-facing cliff gardens and the dockyard walls closes the year.
