New Tredegar (Tredegar Newydd) is a valley town in the upper Rhymney Valley, north of Bargoed, its colliery terraces, the Elliot Colliery winding house — a scheduled monument — and the community hall giving it a working-class valley character distinct from its Monmouthshire neighbour of the same root name. The steep valley sides carry hawthorn, blackthorn, sycamore and bilberry scrub; the Rhymney River runs through the town centre; and the Cefn Hengoed and Mynydd Bedwas moorland on the high ridges above carry gorse and late bilberry that extend the forage year into August.
Collectors attend swarms on the garden walls and eaves of the terraced streets along White Rose Way and Commercial Street, along the Rhymney River bank and its elder, bramble and willowherb margins, in the bilberry and hawthorn scrub on the valley sides above the town, in the churchyard and chapelyard trees, and in the gorse scrub on the moorland approaches to Cefn Hengoed ridge.

Sycamore is the defining tree across these valleys, blanketing every south-facing slope and delivering a generous May flow almost regardless of colony location. Hawthorn on valley-side hedge lines and blackthorn in scrub above the terraces follows through late spring. White clover persists on allotment gardens, valley-floor parks and the gentler upland grazings from June onward. Bramble is dense on reclaimed colliery tips, forest margins and Sirhowy and Ebbw valley sides; bilberry and ling heather on the Gelligaer, Mynydd Islwyn and Mynydd Llangynidr plateaux provide a useful late-August supplement for hives on the valley rim. Alder and willow along the Rhymney, Sirhowy and Ebbw corridors contribute early pollen; meadowsweet and purple loosestrife on wetter valley-floor ground extend the late-summer flow. Ivy on old stone chapel walls and valley-side garden walls closes the year.
